아티스트북이란?
아티스트북의 정의는 무엇일까? 소위 관련 분야에서 전문가라고 불리우는 사람들은 아티스트북을 어떻게 정의할까? 우선 1929년부터 뉴욕시에서 현대 미술 및 조형예술에 중점을 두고 현대미술의 주요 작품들을 소장하고 전시하며 소개하는 뉴욕 현대미술관 MoMA(이하 모마)에 의하면 아티스트북의 정의는 다음과 같다:
"A term referring to publications conceived, designed, and illustrated by artists, often self-published or published by arts organizations in large or unlimited editions. These books are usually printed commercially with the photolithography (offset) technique and meant to be an affordable art form."
예술가에 의해 기획 및 디자인되며 그려진 출판물을 가리키는 용어로, 예술가들이 직접 출판하거나 예술 단체에 의해 대량 또는 [한정판 없이] 언리미티드 에디션으로 출판된다. 이러한 책들은 보통 상업 인쇄 기술인 오프셋으로 제작되며 가격이 저렴한 대중적인 예술 형태를 띤다.
모마에서 내세운 아티스트북의 정의 중에 흥미로운 점을 두 가지 꼽자면, 아티스트북이 대량 생산된 언리미티드 에디션이라고 본 것과 쉽게 구할 수 있는 대중적인 예술 형태로 본다는 것이다. 아티스트북이 처음 나왔을 때의 의도는 분명 그러했을지 몰라도 현실은 어떠할까? 오늘날 아주 높은 가격에 거래되어 매우 구하기 힘든 아티스트북들도 다수 있다. 또, 동시대 대부분의 아티스트북들이 (특정 스타작가의 작품이 아닌 이상) 대량으로 판매되는 상황이 아니라 현실적으로 대량생산은 가능하나 소량으로, 즉 한정판으로 제작되는 경우가 대부분이다.
1995년 아티스트북에 대한 책을 쓴 저자 스테판 버리(Stephen Bury)에 의하면,
"Artists' books are books or book-like objects over the final appearance of which an artist has had a high degree of control; where the book is intended as a work of art in itself."
아티스트북은 예술가가 깊이 관여한 책 또는 책과 유사한 물건으로, 책 자체가 예술 작품으로 의도하여 만들어진 경우를 의미한다.
화가의 책과 아티스트북
아티스트북, Artist's Book의 영어를 직역하자면 예술가의 책을 의미한다는 점에서 '화가의 책'의 개념을 빌려 아티스트북을 설명할 수도 있다.
아티스트북이라는 개념이 있기 전에 가장 초기에 등장한 유사한 개념은 아무래도 앙브루아즈 볼라르(Ambroise Vollard)에 의해 탄생된 리브레 드 아티스트(Livre d'artiste), 직역하면 ’화가의 책’ 이 아닐까? 볼라르는 프랑스의 아트딜러이자 큐레이터였다. 그는 자신이 대중들에게 소개하고 싶었던 화가들의 판화 작업을 담아 제작비가 꽤 드는 고가의 출판물들을 발행한다. 당시의 출판물들은 보통 삽화 전문가가 텍스트를 보완하는 형태로 이미지들을 그려넣었는데, 볼라르의 출판물들은 예술가들의 이미지가 출판물의 주인공이였다. 출판물에 담겨진 작업들은 하나하나 리소그래피로 인쇄되어 고가의 작품집 형태를 띤다.다. 볼라르의 책들은 항상 제본되지 않은 상태로 발행되어 이렇게 쉽게 액자화 할 수 있다.
이러한 화가의 책과 아티스트북은 비슷해 보이지만 자세히 들여다보면 서로 속성이 많이 다르다. 우선, 아티스트북은 화가의 책과는 달리 출판제작이 더 용이한 시대, 대량생산이 가능한 환경에서 생겨난 용어이다. 그래서 ’화가의 책'보다는 훨씬 민주적인 예술로써 고가의 책이라는 이미지보다는 대중들이 접근하기 쉬운 책이라는 의미를 내포하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 위 모마에서 내세운 정의와 같이 말이다.
또, 기술의 발전으로 볼라르 같은 특정 매개자 없이도 예술가가 직접 진두지휘해서 만드는 출판물을 아티스북이라고 할 수 있다. 팝아트 딜러이자 아티스트북을 많이 발행했던 폴 비안치니 또한 아티스트북은 온전히 작가의 선택에 따라, 한정판이 아닌 무한한 수량으로 최선의 품질을 얻기 위한 방식으로 만들어진다고 말했다.
민주적이며 대량 생산 가능한 작가의 작업
비영리 단체이자 아티스트북 서점인 프린티드 매터(Printed Matter)에서는 아티스트북을 작가의 작업으로 간주하는 출판물이라고 정의하고 있다. 모마가 내린 정의와 같은 맥락으로 이 작업들의 대부분이 비싸지 않고 대량 생산되어 민주적인 예술 작업의 형태를 띄고 있다고 설명하고 있다.
Unlike an art book, catalog or monograph that tend to showcase artworks created in another medium, the term ‘artists’ books’ refers to publications that have been conceived as artworks in their own right. These ‘projects for the page’ are generally inexpensive, often produced in large or open editions, and are democratically available.
그래서 아티스트북의 정의는 무엇일까? 기관마다 사람마다 아티스트북의 정의가 미묘하게 다른 만큼 아티스트북은 여전히 현재진행형으로 미술계에서 자리를 천천히 자리를 잡아가고 있는 상황으로 보인다.

However, in reality, many artist's books are not produced in massive quantities, and some can be quite expensive to afford and rare to find.

Livres d'artiste vs Artist's Book
The concept of an artist's book can also be understood by borrowing the notion of 'Livre de Peintre.' Aso known as the term 'Livres d'artiste,' coined by Ambroise Vollard, a French art dealer and curator, may be considered a precursor to the modern concept of artist's books. Vollard published high quality prints that showcased works of artists, placing the artists' images at the forefront of the publication. While Vollard's publications were high-quality art books, they were not exactly what we now consider artist's books.
Artist's books and the 'Livres d'artiste' may seem similar, but upon closer inspection, they have distinct characteristics. Artist's books emerged in an era where publishing and mass production became more feasible. Therefore, the term implies a more democratic form of art accessible to the general public. Unlike the early notion of expensive art books, artist's books are seen as more approachable and affordable art forms.
Moreover, with advancements in technology, artists can directly participate in the book making production without relying on specific intermediaries. Paul Bianchini, a pop art dealer who produced many artist's books, mentioned that artist's books are created entirely based on the artist's choices, often in unlimited quantities, as a means to achieve the best quality.
Democratic Art
The famous non-profit artist's book organization Printed Matter, functioning as an artist's book store, define artist's books as publications considered works of art on their own. In line with MoMA's definition, these works are generally inexpensive, produced in large or open editions, and are democratically accessible.
Unlike art books, catalogs, or monographs that showcase artworks created in another medium, the term 'artists' books' refers to publications conceived as artworks in their own right. So, what is an artist's book? I guess there is no difinite definition yet. Artist's books is still continuing to establish their presence in the art world, evolving as a unique and ongoing phenomenon.
